Iconic Hillside Pottery Defines California Aesthetic May 04 2026

Made of concrete and inset with brightly colored California tiles of the era, Hillside Pottery originated in the San Fernando Valley around 1929.

Borrowing from ancient and classic pottery forms - the amphora, the oil jar, the Rebekah vase - the look gained popularity, appeared in Architectural Digest, and adorned many California estate homes and gardens of the 1930’s.

What we think of as Hillside Pottery actually includes several makers such as Hollywood Cementcraft & the beautiful concrete and tile pottery made and sold in Palm Springs by the Krekorian family.

Hillside Pottery is a true California classic, famously collected by Diane Keaton, actor and champion of California preservation. The look of Hillside Pottery is timeless and sits well with any era - from Arts and Crafts to California Spanish Revival to Mid Century Modern & even contemporary.
