Vintage Storage Ideas for the Home
Just about every space can benefit from added storage - and with vintage dressers, cabinets, and other storage options, form and function can go hand in hand.
At Urban Americana, our selection of mid-century modern furniture is growing and changing every single day. So, we're constantly inspired by new ways to add storage using vintage furniture pieces like dressers and cabinets. From acclaimed interior designers to our vintage-loving customers, here are some of our favorite ideas for vintage storage for every room:
Use a vintage trunk to hold extra blankets, sheets, and pillows.
A vintage trunk at the foot of the bed is the perfect place to store your linens, pillows, and extra throws when they're not in use. Whether you choose an English steel trunk to bring an industrial touch to an otherwise soft, cozy space or want a vintage steamer trunk in a weathered leather for added texture, the possibilities are endless.
Even a medium-sized trunk will provide plenty of space to keep a few extra sheet sets, as well as a winter blanket or two - freeing up precious closet space in your primary and guest bedrooms!
Swap out your standard TV stand for a mid-century modern dresser.
Usually, a typical TV stand offers some storage, whether it's a couple of open shelves or a few closed cabinets. But if you really want to maximize capacity, consider using a vintage dresser as a TV stand instead. Many vintage dressers are the perfect height for holding your TV, whether you plan to stand it on top or mount it directly on the wall behind. You'll gain several drawers of hidden storage, which creates a much cleaner look than open shelving.
Depending on how much space you have and your personal style, you might opt for a low boy-style dresser. The lower profile takes up less visual space but doesn't skimp on storage. If you're working with an extremely small space - like a studio apartment - a mid-century modern nightstand might be an ideal solution. You can easily stand or mount a conservatively sized TV above a sturdy nightstand and still have some storage below.
Place a small vintage dresser in the entryway for easy-access storage.
For most people, their entryway has to serve a multitude of purposes. Ideally, you want it to be a stylish, welcoming place where guests get a fabulous first impression of your home. But you also need it to actually be functional as well - which makes storage a must.
With a small mid-century modern dresser, you can set up a "drop zone" for all your daily necessities without crowding the entryway. Drawers can hold items like your house keys, wallet, dog leashes/collars, and even your shoes, while a small lamp and decorative accents can be placed on top.
Add extra kitchen (and dining) storage with a vintage sideboard.
It's not necessarily unusual to see a vintage sideboard/credenza in a dining room. But have you ever thought about using one as a way to expand your kitchen storage?
For homes that don't have much in the way of cabinet space, a mid-century modern sideboard can be a saving grace. Dishes, extra items for entertaining, linens, and even small appliances like a toaster or blender can easily be hidden away. Or, you can set up a "secret pantry" in a vintage credenza, organizing your dry goods in easy-to-reach drawers.
Create a kitchen island (with storage!) using a vintage buffet.
A spacious kitchen is a luxury that not every home has, but you don't have to do a full kitchen renovation to get one. A mid-century modern buffet can be a superb stand-in for a traditional island, providing you with much-needed cooking prep space and added storage. You'll want to look for pieces that will fit your space without interrupting the overall flow of the room - the goal is to enhance your home, not make your everyday routine more complicated.
Once you've found the perfect piece, make use of the newly-added storage in whatever way works for you. Don't forget to style the top (you can't go wrong with a vintage vase filled with fresh flowers or a bowl of fruit!).
