History of This Design: One of the most widely know Turkish rugs, the town of Ushak in Western Turkey produced a variety of unique and bold designs for domestic and European markets. Many of the early Ushak rugs were excellent quality and beautiful designs — so much so that European masters began depicting them in their paintings. This happened so frequently that those designs began to carry the name of the painters associated with them —among them, Lotto, Bellini, Holbein — and became highly coveted throughout Europe. Both repeating patterns and medallions exist in Ushak designs, and noticeable oversized motifs exist in many of the designs. While early designs favored rich colors (red and blues), later trends show a much lighter, earthy pallet.
