Antique Anglo-Indian Rams Horn Silver Chased Wedding Chair

This is an antique Anglo-Indian dowry wedding chair. The mahogany chair is entirely covered in silver hand tooled metal and is truly unique. Usually on such wedding chairs, the rams' heads are located on the ends of the back plate. On this unique chair, the ram heads with large horns are located on the ends of the chair arms. The back plate of this chair is also much larger than what is usually seen on this style. The chair is very sturdy and the seat has been reupholstered in black low pile, sueded cotton velvet. 

These furnishing first began to appear during the Mughal Reign in India with an influx of British, French, Dutch & Portuguese explorers. This style blended Western designs with the metal working techniques of Indian artisans. Now known as Anglo-Indian furniture, it is specially clad in silver & gold metals as these materials are considered purifying in traditional Hindu scripture.
